Fenwick Island State Park — Mostly Sunny, 85°F

A Classic Summer Day on Little Assawoman Bay

Today is delivering that quintessential mid-summer experience at Fenwick Island State Park with mostly sunny skies, a high of 85°F, and a low of 77°F during our paddling window. We’re starting the morning with 15 mph southwest winds and humidity in the mid-80s, so expect to feel that warmth immediately.

Paddling Window: 7AM-7PM Breakdown

The day kicks off at 7am with 77°F and 15 mph southwest winds—already breezy but manageable for experienced paddlers. Temperatures climb steadily through the morning: 78°F at 8am, 80°F by 9am, and hitting 83°F by 10am. That mid-morning window from 10am to noon is your sweet spot when winds drop to 10 mph and conditions become much more forgiving on Little Assawoman Bay. By 1pm, the wind shifts south and picks back up to 15 mph, where it holds through mid-afternoon. The real challenge arrives at 4pm when winds increase to 20 mph and stay there through 7pm. If you’re newer to kayaking or prefer calmer water, target that 10am-noon window without question.

Through the Day

Early birds paddling at 7am will deal with 85% humidity and that 15 mph breeze—warm and sticky with some chop on the bay. Midday from 10am-12pm offers the best combination: full sun, 85°F temps, and those gentler 10 mph winds making for smooth paddling. Late afternoon gets progressively windier, with 20 mph gusts from the south creating genuine chop by 4pm. Evening paddlers at 6-7pm will face 83°F temps but consistent 20 mph winds that can make returning to the launch point a workout.

Why Today Works

Today is ideal for paddlers who embrace summer heat and don’t mind working against some wind. That 20 mph afternoon wind is no joke on a paddleboard, so SUP enthusiasts should hit the water early. Kayakers comfortable with choppy conditions will enjoy the full day; beginners should stick to that calm 10am-noon window.
