Lake Altoona — Sunny, 63°F

Well, well, well. Look who decided to show up uninvited—spring, apparently. Today at Lake Altoona we’re climbing from a frosty 40°F at dawn to a downright balmy 63°F by afternoon, all under sunny skies. Wind starts at a dead calm 0 mph, which is exactly what we’d expect from a Wisconsin winter day that’s clearly having an identity crisis.

Paddling Window: 7AM-7PM Analysis

Here’s where it gets interesting. At 7am, you’re looking at 40°F with zero wind and 85% humidity—the lake will be glass, but you’ll be shivering like a chihuahua in a meat locker. By 9am, temps hit 47°F and the wind finally wakes up at 5 mph from the NNW. Then from 11am through 2pm, wind kicks up to 10 mph NNW while temperatures cruise from 54°F to 62°F. Your sweet spot? That 3pm-5pm window when you’ve got 63°F, wind dropping back to 5 mph NW, and humidity at a comfortable 30%. By 7pm, we’re back down to 56°F with essentially no wind.

Through the Day

Early birds paddling at 7am will enjoy mirror-flat water with 0 mph wind, but at 40°F, you’d better have layers or a masochistic streak. Mid-morning through early afternoon sees the wind building to 10 mph, creating some light chop on the lake—nothing dramatic, but enough to remind you that you’re actually paddling, not just floating on a mirror. Late afternoon is genuinely gorgeous: 63°F, light 5 mph breezes from the northwest, and that golden winter sun that Wisconsin occasionally gifts us like a suspicious holiday bonus.

Why Today Works

This is a day for every paddler who owns a dry bag and mild trust issues with February. Experienced kayakers can handle that 10 mph midday wind no problem, while beginners should aim for the calm morning hours or that silky 5 mph late afternoon stretch. Honestly, if you’ve been waiting for things to do in Wisconsin that don’t involve frostbite, this is your moment.
